ORGANIZATION
Pack 363 is part of the Boy Scout of America organization (BSA) Cub scout program
through its Southeast Louisiana Council Regional Office in Metairie. The council
oversees various districts. Among them is the Cypress district, under which we belong.
Cub scouting is for boys from the first grade through the fifth grade. Cub scouts will
then typically transition into Boy scouting. All packs need a supporting or charter
organization. Our charter organization is the Bayou Woods Elementary School PTA in
Slidell, LA. The school provides us with a place to meet, among other things. While
Bayou Woods school's PTA is our chartering organization, membership is not limited
to Bayou Woods Elementary. Home-schoolers and students at schools are welcome
to join.

The boys in the same grade are grouped in dens. Dens consist of a group of 5 to 8
boys typically. The Pack consists of all the dens of the various grades. Pack meetings
are usually organized around monthly theme (ex. Collecting, holiday celebration,
Halloween) in addition to some standard activities such as Achievement awards,
birthday celebration. Below are the following ranks that apply to Cub scouting:

First Graders (6 year) - Tiger
Second Graders (7 year) - Wolf
Third Graders (8 year) - Bear
Fourth Graders (9 year) - Webelos 1
Fifth Graders - (10 year) Webelos 2

Each den will have a den leader and/or assistant den leader(s) that will organize and
run meetings, track your scout progress towards achieving the next rank or merit, as
well as participate in the monthly den leaders planning meetings. The den leader(s) is
a volunteer parent out of the same den. The den leader in conjunction with the other
den parents will decide on activities for the next meetings to come.

All den leaders and Pack volunteers are not professional Boy Scout employees,
though many have several years in (cub) scouting. All are, however, dedicated
parents that much like you, would like to offer to their children the same outdoor and
family fun they might have experienced as child themselves and for that rely on 99
years of cub scouting experience in America. Hence, the pack relies heavily on help
from volunteers which can take several forms. Some parents will volunteer a couple of
hours a week to become a den leader, others help by, for example, assisting with
setting up for the monthly Pack meeting, take pictures of den or pack events, fill water
balloons, make crafts, or act as our webmaster. Contact the Cub master to find out in
which way you can help. We may be able to put your skills, hobbies or other interests
to work for the benefit of everyone in the pack.

MEETINGS
The dens are the primary meeting opportunity for scouts. Once a den is formed, the
volunteer leader and the parents assigned to that den by the Cub master will agree
on a meeting time and frequency (once a week, once every two week, etc.) and the
location. Locations for den meetings have traditionally been in the past someone's
home, although lately there is a change to use more public places such as churches,
libraries, clubs, community centers and parks. Bayou Woods (Cafeteria) is also
available to meet after school (needs to be approved by the school administration)

Pack meetings are held monthly at Bayou Woods Elementary cafeteria at 7pm usually
on the last Friday of the month, except for the months of November and December
due to the Holidays. The meetings for those two months will be held instead on earlier
Fridays (same venue, same time). Den and Pack meetings target a 1 to 1-1/2 hours
duration.

Den leaders are required to attend a monthly den leaders meeting to plan the
upcoming Pack meeting. Those are normally held on a Tuesday.

DUES AND FINANCES
The following dues apply on a yearly basis:

1.        BSA membership $15 per year (Jan - Dec) (mandatory).  If you are new to
Scouting, you will need to pay $22.50 and this will cover your BSA dues from August
of current year to December of the following year.   If you are currently a BSA
member, your membership fee is $15.  Covers insurance, etc.
2.        Pack Dues are $35 (mandatory) and cover pack meeting expenses, snacks,
decorations, pack activities, rank achievement badges,
For Example:
Existing Scouts will pay $50.00 at registration in August.
New Scouts will pay $57.50 at registration in August.
3.        Den dues (optional). The Den may elect to charge a nominal fee per meeting
to cover the cost of crafts or field trips. Please note that this is not that common since
there are plenty of activities that can be done at no charge (ex. visit to a state park,
Stennis Space Center, library)
4.        Boy's Life magazine (optional) costs $12 per year. Parents can signup at
registration or directly with the magazine.

The above fees do not cover the cost of uniforms, handbook, uniform identification
badges (rank and most event badges are covered), camping trips, camping
equipment, field visits or most meals. In addition, the pack keeps its dues at a
minimum in comparison with other activities by raising funds in the Fall (through the
sale of gourmet popcorn) and in the Spring through discount cards. The pack has a
policy of sharing any fundraising profits equally (50-50%) with the scouts. We have
setup "scout accounts" to track his fundraising balance which can go towards
covering most scout expenses such as dues, event registration fees, and
advancement awards.

The pack also has an "Every scout participates" program in which qualifying scouts of
lesser economic resources can have his dues covered. Ask a den leader for more
details.

RULES
1.         When a cub scout attends a Pack or Den event, it is required that a parent or
guardian be present. Moreover, Cub scouting is a family-oriented program that
encourages others in the family to attend meetings and even participate in certain
events. Siblings are always welcome. Also, no alcohol and/or smoking in the vicinity of
children is allowed
2.        The primary means of communication between Pack/den leadership and den
parents will be by email. Pack and den meetings and other events will be announced
with several days or weeks of advance notice.  With over 50 scouts listed, it would be
burdensome for our volunteer den leaders to contact each individual member on a
regular basis otherwise. If you don not have access to email service, please notify
your den leader so that alternative arrangements can be made on an exception basis.
In addition, we have a         bulletin board at the main entrance to Bayou Woods
Elementary where major events will be posted. Also, you may check our website for
more details on upcoming events or general info (past event pictures, etc.) at
www.cubscoutpack363.com or on our Facebook page.
3.        Den parents are asked to RSVP for den meetings. While attendance to all den
or Pack meetings is not mandatory, be courteous to your den leaders who spent
personal time putting together an interesting         agenda for his/her son and yours.
Many activities require multiple participants or may require advance purchases that
may become otherwise surplus material if your scout does not attend.
4.         Please keep side conversations during Pack meetings to a minimum.
Running a pack meeting with 40 to 80 scouts of varying ages is not easy.  Due to
poor acoustics the pack leadership needs the utmost silence in the cafeteria to
communicate/interact with scouts and their parents.
5.        Please show up on time to Pack and den meetings. This will ensure that we
achieve our meeting duration goal of 1-1/2 hours.
6.         Scout parents are expected to help with the cleanup and restoration of the
cafeteria upon the conclusion of a pack meeting or any other event. The more people
help, the sooner we all can leave for home.

UNIFORM AND HANDBOOK REQUIREMENTS
It is expected that scouts will wear their uniforms (class A) at Pack and den events.
However, rest assured that your scout will never be made to feel uncomfortable
because of a missing piece of uniform or by its appearance. Nevertheless, boys will
like to wear their uniform since it gives them a sense of belonging and of pride (show
off those earned badges!). In addition to the uniforms, various optional scouting T-
shirts are available to be used at outdoor events. Also, we have made arrangements
with both our affiliated schools, Bayou Woods Elementary and Carolyn Parks Middle
School to allow students/scouts to wear their class A uniform on Fridays when we
have pack meetings. We have done this in order to minimize your preparations
in attending the 7pm pack meetings.

Please remember to replace incorrect badges or insignia with the correct ones below.

When you contact the Slidell Army or Scout Shop stores you will need to provide
them with the following info pertaining to your scout:

Rank: Tiger, Wolf, Bear or Webelos (Webelos is a two-year program)
Pack#: 363
Council: Southeast Louisiana
Den#:  (obtain this from your den leader or Cub master)

They will be available to assist you with the correct color uniform, pieces of clothing
and pack/den# patches and insignia. For more info on placement on badges, pickup
a Boy Scout catalog at these locations. There are colored pictures of what it is
supposed to look like.

Pack 363 only requires as a minimum, the following uniform items:
•        Shirt
•        Belt and clip
•        Neckerchief (color by rank) with slide

Note: Cap and socks are optional. In addition, Bayou Woods school's khaki shorts or
pants can be used for the rest of the uniform.  See pictures on the correct use and
placement of patches below.

RANK HANDBOOKS
Handbooks for the various ranks are available at the Slidell Army and Scout shops as
well. These books outline the program requirements and give ideas for activities

CAMPING AND EQUIPMENT
Good News! With the exception of a tent, most camping items are readily available in
the average home. Basic 6ft by 6ft tents at most sporting good stores (Academy,
Sport Authority) sell for about $20-30. A gas stove sells for about $40 and you may
chose to share this with someone in your den. For your convenience, a detail list of
camping equipment essentials will be posted on our website: www.cubscoutpack363.
com.  It is not required that you acquire all camping items at once. Most are collected
over the course of years. Also, you may want to put that tent or other camping
equipment on your Christmas list.

Contrary to boy scouting, Cub scout camping is done at facilities with nearby latrines.
Showers are most times available as well. The typical Pack 363 camping event will last
one to two days during a weekend. Some of the sites we have used are: Camp Villere,
Fontainebleau, Tickfaw State Park and the large scouting Camp Salmen in Mississippi
(Near Kiln). Meals will vary by location and occasion. In general, you are responsible
for your meal preparation, but occasionally we will have a large Pack meal. Camp
Salmen has a "cafeteria" for which meal tickets can be purchased in advance.
